National Media Outlet Names Best Offseason Move By Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles seemed to make a litany of great moves this offseason — especially in the 2023 NFL Draft.

But one timely move stands above the rest according to CBS Sports.

CBS Sports named the Eagles’ decision to sign star quarterback Jalen Hurts to an extension before the Baltimore Ravens signed Lamar Jackson to an extension as Philadelphia’s best move of the offseason.

From CBS Sports: The Eagles made plenty of excellent offseason moves, but their best one was signing Hurts to his massive extension before Jackson, Justin Herbert, or Joe Burrow agreed to contract extensions. Hurts set the market for those quarterbacks, making an average annual salary of $51 million per year — the highest for any player in NFL history.

That status lasted 10 days, as Jackson signed a five-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, making $52 million per year. Baltimore used the Hurts’ contract with the Eagles as a barometer for Jason, which helped both sides get a deal done.

Come the start of the season, Hurts could be fourth on the average annual salary list with Herbert and Burrow getting extensions soon. A tremendous job by the Eagles to get the Hurts deal completed first, setting the new market for quarterbacks across the league.

That move certainly saved the Eagles a bit of cash (it was also very wise to get the deal done with Hurts before Joe Burrow signs what’s expected to be a record breaking extension with the Cincinnati Bengals). And more importantly, it ensured that Philly’s franchise quarterback won’t be leaving town anytime soon.
