Eagles Went Shopping For Trade Deadline ‘Discount ’ On Pro Bowler, NFL Insider Says

Howie Roseman is leaving no stone unturned. SI’s Albert Breer reports the Philadelphia Eagles general manager took a swing at trading for All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey before the Carolina Panthers sent him to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.

Last Monday, GM Scott Fitterer pulled McCaffrey aside to give him the landscape, tell him that he planned to listen to offers and also that he’d be comfortable hanging on to him. … More calls poured in Tuesday, with some teams just fishing—offering a third-rounder or a fourth-rounder to see whether a discount was in the offing. The Broncos and Eagles were among those teams (both have GMs who like to investigate pretty much everything). The day clarified who was really in and who wasn’t.

In the end, the Panthers shipped McCaffrey to the 49ers for a boatload of draft picks (although none of them was a first-round selection). McCaffrey made his San Francisco debut Sunday with eight carries for 38 yards and two receptions for 24 yards in the 49ers’ 44-23 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Also from the never say never department: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported over the weekend (per Sportsnaut) the Eagles are interested in Pro Bowl pass rusher Brian Burns.

“Brian Burns is a player teams are trying to get. The Panthers are telling teams, ‘no, that we’re probably done. We made some moves. We want to keep core foundational pieces like wide receiver DJ Moore and Burns.’ I’m told teams like the LA Rams, who barely have a first-round pick, they’re trying to get Brian Burns. The Chiefs and the Eagles are calling around.”

However a Burns trade is unlikely, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

One team offered two first-round picks to the Panthers for Burns, league sources told ESPN. The Panthers told that team, however, that they are not trading Burns, who is in the middle of his fourth NFL season on a deal that pays him $2.34 million in base salary this year.
